Making Sprigs for the Catalpa Pershing Bridge

Original frog eggs for molds

Sprig molds have been used to decorate clay objects for thousands of years.  In that tradition, we have made several plaster molds to aid in the decorating of the tile panels for the bridge.  The process starts by forming a object out of wet clay or plasticine.

We then cast plaster molds of these objects.  Once the plaster is dry the original object is removed leaving a void in the shape of the original object.

The clay can then be altered. More detail is added, making every bit of the imagery original and touched by hand.

By using sprig molds, in conjunction with other methods of adding and removing clay,  Diana has the ability to make each tile panel original while maintaining rhythm and continuity throughout the bridge.

The new studio has become a very exciting place to be.
